Come funziona la certificazione

RisEarth is the body in charge to certify the climate neutrality and distribute the label on products, services, events and organizations

The certification is based on the verification of 3 key requirements:

Calculation, offset, reduction.

Calculate the annual carbon footprint of products / bodies to certify

Offset the CO2e emitted with high-quality carbon credits

Plan to reduce emissions and publish a company commitment

IN DETAILS:

Calculate

Organizations interested in getting certified in 2022 have as their first fundamental requirement to measure emissions for the previous year.

How does the calculation work?
RisEarth requires a calculation of the emissions associated with the product, service or entity to be certified. The calculation is based on the method proposed by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the most widely used reporting standard in the world.
How accurate do you have to be?
The accuracy of the data and monitoring depends considerably on the size of the organization as described below. We understand the difficulty of reporting emissions and are ready to support you right away to make the process as simple and convenient as possible. So if you invoice less than 10 million euros, RisEarth accepts an assessment of the emissions of your products through scientific reports, recognized calculators, geographic and sector benchmarks.
I only buy energy from renewable sources, how can I show you?
We will be satisfied with the certificates of origin that prove the truthfulness and origin of this energy.

Offset

The second requirement is the compensation of all greenhouse gas emissions of the product / entity (to be certified) through the purchase of certified carbon credits.

Attention: credits must comply with the certification requirements to avoid greenwashing practices.

Where / how can carbon credits be purchased?

Certified carbon credits are tons of CO2 absorbed or not emitted by projects with a positive impact on the climate.

All organizations are encouraged to purchase credits with RisEarth, especially for those that fall into the “small business” category, but the purchase of credits with third-party providers is still accepted if the requirements listed below are met.

What are the requirements regarding carbon credits?

The requirements for the validity of neutralization are necessary to ensure the high quality of carbon credits. They are very precise but, at the same time, a little incomprehensible to non-experts.

If you have not yet purchased certified credits we can help you in the process. In case you want to buy credits from specialized traders, they will have no problem meeting our validity criteria.

The criteria range from the use of certified credits only to the financing of only projects located in developing countries (excluding carbon capture and storage projects), to a minimum limit on the purchase price of the single credit, to an age limit, up to the characteristics of the credit mix to offset.

What documentation do I need to submit?

The necessary documents concern the purchase operation, a payment receipt and the characteristics of the supported projects.

Reduce

The 3rd requirement concerns the creation, implementation and monitoring of an emissions reduction plan which may concern the single certified product or the entire organization and which we will call BRP (Business Reduction Plan) for simplicity.

Companies that certify their products / services for the first time have up to 6 months to submit and implement the BRP.

Do I have to make a plan to reduce the emissions of the certified product or of the entire company?

You can focus on creating a BRP for the single product, certified service.

Focusing on the single certification will help you create a structured method that you can later extend to all the other activities of your organization.

Despite this, it is recommended, whenever possible, to plan the emissions of the entire organization and its supply chain and extend the BRP as much as possible.

How much detail do you need to go into?

This depends a lot on the size of the organization. In any case, RisEarth has in its interests the support of organizations that want to reduce their emissions.

For companies with a turnover of less than 10 million euros, the BRP to be presented can also be very simple but always remains measurable and achievable.
The more the size of the company grows, the more the BRP proves to be structured and characterized by objectives, actions, intermediate milestones and timelines.

What are the characteristics of the Plan?

The Business Reduction Plan must have a duration between 1 and 3 years, annual objectives, starting from the date of the presentation of the certification application, and final ones. These objectives must be SMART, that is: specific (Specific), measurable (Measurable), achievable (Achievable), realistic (Realistic) and defined in time (Time-bound).

I don’t have a reduction plan yet, can I still apply for certification?

Of course yes. From the certification application you have 6 months to submit a PAR that meets the right requirements. This is because writing a realistic and implementable plan takes time. Don’t worry, it is neither an expensive nor an impossible operation.

For one year you can apply the Climate Neutrality label on your products and services

LABEL

Why a climate-neutral certification?

Because 60% of consumers do not believe in self-certified green branding

Although you can take all kinds of green actions and plan for 2050 is great, consumers will not believe your words until they are certified.

A certification is essential to communicate the sustainability of products and services in a simple and transparent way

The label represents zero impact on the climate, fight against greenwashing, business foresight, as well as an intergenerational communication lever to involve anyone in the transition to a sustainable, just, ecological society.
